Sign language and charades !

First and FOREMOST, I have to thank Gemini Girl for her thoughtful gift.
The signing cards are awesome. I have already started trying to teach the boys some of the signs. Spencer seems ready to go. The gift was GREATLY appreciated. Thank you thank you thank you !

My goal now, since returning from New Jersey is to learn sign language fluently. To teach it to my children and to HOPEFULLY better communicate with Toni and Hollie when they come to visit in November ?....December ?.....maybe January ? Well I'm still working on the logistics of that hopeful trip :)

Talking with Toni and Hollie was pretty easy. They were both mainstreamed in the hearing world and are both very good at communicating with hearing people. Toni has talked about her family still not knowing sign on her blog. (something I can't understand)
A lot of deaf people are forced to read lips and speak in deaf talk, never learning sign language. I can't imagine a world with limited communication.

Hollie who has no hearing ability what so ever spoke very loud and very clear. There were times that I felt as if I was talking to a hearing person...other than the fact that her hands were going 50 miles an hour. :)
Toni, my shy sweet Toni :) was very soft spoken. She has a beautiful speaking voice, but would mostly sign. Which helped me learn a lot of signs while we were there.

One thing I did learn is that in order to be deaf you must be able to spell well. HOLY SHIT. They sign words at the speed of light. There were several times that I had to have Toni sign a word out for me like 3 times.....I had the problem of watching her expression and not focusing on her hands. (she has the greatest expressions.....especially when she's in a heated debate with Hollie about something important....like chocolate)

Of course we learned all of the dirty words. sex, masturbate, asshole, fart, poop, bitch. :)
If you wanted to know what the signs were, you would ask Hollie, because it was fun to watch her squirm and blush...and then after terrorizing her for a few minutes you would ask Toni. Once we learned the sign we of course spent the next little while practicing by calling each other bitches :) (yes we are 12)

ANOTHER AMAZING THING, when Mikaela would get in trouble, or when she would argue about something with her moms. (HARDLY ever happened) She wouldn't make any noise. She would argue and cry very quietly. It was amazing. She understands that her moms are deaf and knows that screaming and crying will do nothing for her.
She speaks deaf talk when signing to them.....and under her circumstances speaks VERY well when talking to those of us who hear. She signed when talking to the kids sometimes, and taught the little ones signs too.

It was so much fun to meet these amazing women. To watch their children.
To learn, even though a limited amount, another language.

Here is a website. It's a GREAT TOOL to learn sign language. You click on the letter and then the word and it is signed for you. How awesome is that.
Thanks S for sending it to me.

I am glad you enjoyed the cards. After reading your story about Spencer the other day, and I came across the cards- I could not help but pick them up.

I hope the shirt/ hoodie fits Syd- and that the boys enjoy the dolls!

D- how was this blog sad ? It wasn't meant to be sad at all :)
Maybe you are in a very sensitive place. Lets ask some questions. Have you been crying at commercials lately ?
If a spot doesn't come out of Lexie's shirt after the first time that you wash it, do you cry ?
Have you been eating more ice-cream than you normally do ?
:) If you answered yes to 2 or more of these questions...you MIGHT be a little sensitive right now :) ha ha ha

Blushing..Blushing...getting me on spot again....you girls know how to get my face all red!

I'll have to agree with Keri--this bonding is just so special and how often does this happen where one family lives out in the west and one family lives out in the east meeting through DSR..It is just so amazing..

Checked this while at work during my break...:) a good smile is what I needed after a stressful day!

I love sign language! I took 2 years of ASL in high school. I have an ASL dictionary if you want to borrow it. I used to be really good but have lost some of what I knew. I can spell fast though. I taught Cam some signs before he could talk which was nice. I hope they come to visit. We could have a kick ass party with a lot of people!

I am so glad that you are finally catching on. If you want you have your kids learn some of the basic signs for foods, family, feelings, colors, etc. get to the library and check out any of the Signing Times dvd's. We would recommend Volume 4 titled Family, Feelings and Fun. I guarantee your kids will LOVE them. You will LOVE them. They are fun for all ages to watch. All three of our kids watch them instead of the Wiggles, they are that good. They will pick up signs fast. Our twins (22 months) know how to sign- more, thank you, please, cracker, cheese, milk, water, eat, thirsty and many more. All from watching these videos. T and I have both told you about these, please don't make me hunt you down and send one to you. (though I think we have your address, did you get the thank you post card for your walk donation from Pete?) I am sure that Toni and Hollie would vouch for them.

That's amazing!
We just started watching our signing video and really want Andrew to learn it. My cousin taught her son sign and by 18 months, he was an incredible communicator.
I know Hollie and Toni are amazing just from their blog! I can't imagine meeting them in person!
I am really curious what the sign for masterbate is!!

Let me clarify K......... I meant good tears, I meant aww that is great tears. I meant Oh man I so miss my best friend and am jealous and need to go have margaritas with her tears. See the difference. And no I have not answered two out of the three questions lol.
